What is vaginitis and what are the symptoms?

A vaginal infection (your doctor may call it bacteria vaginitis, yeast vaginitis, trichomoniasis vaginitis) is an infection that results in minor inflammation and other symptoms in and around your vagina. It may cause redness, swelling, irritation or even pain, abnormal vaginal discharge and odour. In some cases, when left untreated, this can result in serious complications.

Why should you use a feminine wash instead of soap and body wash?

Regular soap and body wash won’t eradicate the micro-organisms that cause vaginal infections. What’s more, regular soap can actually upset the natural balance of bacteria in your vagina, making it more likely to get an infection.

What’s the natural vaginal flora and why is it important?

“Flora” is the term used to describe the micro-organisms that live on or in our bodies. Some flora actually have a positive effect on our health, while others can multiply to become harmful. In the vagina, the normal flora actually helps prevent infections. The normal flora is called lactobacilli that live in our vagina area. It protects women against feminine intimate area infections and keeps the normal vaginal flora intact.

Sometimes, the vaginal flora becomes unbalanced, making it more likely to get an infection.

What causes vaginal infections and irritations?

Vaginal infections are very common – it’s estimated that 75% of women have had one at least once. They occur when infectious bacteria, viruses or fungi grow in or around the vagina.

Bacterial infections are the most common cause, accounting for up to 50% of cases. It happens when there’s a change in the types and amounts of bacteria normally found in the vagina.

Fungal infections like candida albicans are probably the next most common cause. Fungal infections are often called vaginal yeast infections.

Other possible causes of vaginal irritation include:

  • Tight nylon underwear that doesn’t provide good ventilation, resulting in perspiration and lack of air circulation
  • The use of contraceptives
  • The use of broad-spectrum antibiotics for the treatment of other infections
  • The use of vaginal deodorants
  • The lack of personal hygiene

Why is BETADINE® Feminine Care effective?

BETADINE® Feminine Care products are specially formulated to maintain vaginal hygiene and protect against vaginal infections. They help keep the normal vaginal flora intact.

To manage vaginal issues, it’s important to restore the normal vaginal flora. Using BETADINE® Feminine Care helps prevent a single, harmful bacteria or fungi from dominating the flora, keeping the natural balance.

The active ingredient in BETADINE® Feminine Care, povidone-iodine, has proven to be effective against a wide spectrum of micro-organisms that cause vaginal infections. The eradication of a specific micro-organism may result in a gap in the make-up of the flora that may then be replaced by harmful surviving or dormant micro-organisms. Because it does not target just one type of micro-organism, BETADINE® Feminine Care cleanses off the bad germs and allows the normal vaginal flora (good bacteria) to return.

BETADINE® Feminine Care relieves irritation and deodorizes your intimate area by removing germs causing these problems.
